good excuse for eating gum drops
After seeing the gingerbread houses at the German Christmas Bazaar I had to make one. It was a three day process, what with the making of the parts and the drying of the royal icing, and then having to make more royal icing because I didn't make enough the first go around. Camille says she wants to learn to make royal icing so she can make a batch to just eat. At decorating time, she would rather watch the American Music Awards, oh well. Stefan and I had a good time decorating it and maybe even a better time eating gum drops.Our gingerbread houses always look like a cheap Southeast Portland rental inhabited by overly cheery people.A few years ago we labored over a gorgeous gingerbread house in the back yard at my sister's house, (another year it was beautiful and warm in Northern California at the end of November.) After we finished we went in the house to wash our hands and the dog got up on the picnic table and ate the whole thing.Now back to my regularly scheduled program of unpacking the studio/office room. -

Stefan has been taking piano now for a couple months, he’s really into it, he plays piano off and on all day. He doesn’t like to read music much and easily memorizes his pieces. He also plays fly-swatter guitar.

Last night when Peter came home Stefan and I were in the pool, and Peter ended up jumping in too. It’s the super hot season now, yesterday the embassy thermometer said 125 degrees. But if you jump in the pool, then sit under the fan in the pilote, the palm trees wave around, bouganvilla blossoms drop in the pool, the bananas hang in the trees, Stefan pretends to be a dolphin…sweet times I don’t want to forget.

Sunday was an “international” riding event, meaning people came from Burkina for a jumping competition. Camille and her friends are happiest at the equestrian center. Also she has so much freedom, I wonder if she will miss it after we leave Niger? Now she goes to the equestrian center twice a week for lessons, she goes an hour early, just to get the horses ready, and on Saturday she goes all afternoon for games. The birds in the trees, the smell of the horses, her nice riding instructor, Hassan who says ça va, ça va a million times; sweet moments.

after-marshmallow soup
During the break Camille made wool mice for the kittens and Stefan flew 100 paper airplanes. They blew bubbles, played on the swings, swam, went to riding camp, played checkers, knocked down miles of dominos, read books and we made marshmallows.
As soon as the marshmallows are cooling in the pan, you make the antidote: carrot cabbage spinach soup.
