Tis the season

I had a visit from my regional medical officer who was here for a whole week. During his stay, we had a candidate for the school director position who was also here. A cold and flu virus swept through and wrecked havoc but that seems to be pretty much over.

My sister Helen is coming today with my nephew, Elliott and niece, Ana! We are so excited! We hope to provide them with an education as well as memories to last a life time. I even pulled out the Christmas tree. You know, the one we bought last year. I looks okay but for what it makes up in appearance, it lacks in smell. Stefan tried to squirt it with a holiday scent (pepperminty) but that only lasted a few minutes. But Santa will appreciate the African Creche.

Oh! And speaking of Santa! On his way in to visit kids here, he took a rag doll roll off the camel and hit the ground. I got to treated his injury and no worry kids! He’s alright. Just a sore shoulder. I told him to put ice on it.

Give Helen and Elliot big hugs for me. I am so happy at least you will have some family there with you. Sweet memories and a great education for all of them.
So wish I could do it, but I can’t leave Dad and it would be a bad thing to take him so far away from his Drs. Love to all.

We have a fake tree, too, even in Russia… The Christmas trees don’t go on sale here until before New Year’s, a bit late for Western Christmas… I remember in 1991 being so sad that there was NOTHING reminiscent of Christmas in the USA on Christmas day… and the very next day there were bazaars all over the place selling NEW YEAR’S trees. It was quite a surprised for a then clueless American! We have a fake one now after suffering through the mess of a real one the first years. You can’t really regulate the heat in Russian apartments, and they’re SO hot and dry that the tree died within a week–and was such dry, sharp mess to clean up. It stinks having to store a fake tree the other 11 months of the year in an apartment with no storage, but that’s part of the territory. I now buy “housewarmer” candles from Yankee Candle in the US that smell like Christmas trees, lighting them every day that we have the tree up–it really does make the tree smell “real”!!! You have to bring the candles back from the US, but it’s worth it… And you lucky guys will get to have packages delivered from the US! So you’re all set!
