what are you listening to right now?

Peter's cousin, known around here as mc, always chooses a personal cd of the year. I am so looking forward to hearing what it is. Camille recently downloaded Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams and I love it. She loves Green Day, and Stefan is asking me to play this song again. He has the gene where you can listen to one song for an entire afternoon. Here are the last ten individual songs we downloaded from iTunes:

Yellow acoustic Coldplay
Shimmer Shawn Mullens (trip down memory lane)
Monsoon Tokio Hotel (Camille)
Light On David Cook
Irreplaceable Beyonce (Camille)
Trouble Cat Stevens (cause we are learning it on guitar)
Unfaithful Rhianna (Camille, keeping us with it, I guess.)
True Colors acoustic Cindy Lauper (cause I want to learn it on guitar)
Pata Pata Miriam Makiba (Had to hear this after hearing of her passing, she is one of those artists whose cassette tape I wore out, good times.)
Happy Christmas (War is Over) John Lennon

How about you?

I remember listening to Miriam Makeba in Arcata during the “fight apartheid” years. I completely forgot about her until she recently went to the other side. I’m sure we had the same tape. I probably got it from you. I just bought two Miriam Makeba CD’s: Walela and Homeland. Love them both.

Pata Pata and Happy Christmas are the only ones I’ve ever heard of. Or loved. And I have five iPods. Go figure!

Thank you for the reminder! I’m behind. I mainly listen to the blues, world music and rock & roll. Although I like to hear new music through my kids, and I like Green Day as well. I like to listen to the blues with my brother Peet, but lately he has been an influence on me with serious music, which I appriciate (it’s not all calasical in my mind though). Last year it was a CD I got from Peet from Niger, West African music (the name escapes me), it’s still in my car. This year it’s tuff, lots of good jauns. We brought some great music from Costa Rica, old calypso music and Costa Rican pop reggae. And Buddy Guy has a new CD (one of my living musical gurus, an original blues brother). And I still have a CD to buy. Thanks for the reminder Dina!

Listening to Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, getting ready to teach them in my Canadian Studies class. I’m going to play “Helpless” and “Suzanne.”
And then of course, I’m listening to Cody’s version of Debussy’s Jardins dans la pluie:

I’m still amazed by him. Don’t know how he does it.
I’m also listening to flatpicking solos, guitar renditions of fiddle tunes. It’s fun. I’m getting up to Intermediate speed.
I can’t wait to see your first guitar/vocals on Youtube. You should be getting close.

I’ve been enjoying the new Rachel Yamagata cd, titled, Elephants. I just love her rich, husky voice!
Great question. I always like discovering what others are listening to.

Ok Dina, a day after your very appreciated reminder of which CD tops my charts this year, I was having lunch with a friend and my attorney/friend showed up (lunch & beer is the only business we ever have together, like it should be). He informed me that a mutual aquaintance had passed away, somewhat expected but very sad none the less. On my way home driving in my car I listens to Buddy Guy’s new CD Skin Deep (he is a living blues legend, doing some of his best work after straighting his live out). At that point the CD of the year came to me all on it’s own, I didn’t even need to seek it. Thanks again for the reminder, it amazes me on how sometimes things go together, I believe it’s a good thing.

The Killers (Name of band totally doesn’t portray their music) just released their new album. They are my top favorite and everything they produce is so different yet so good. Their new album reminds me a little of David Bowie. The best song is “This is Your Life”
