Peter is one of the few people in the State Dept to ever qualify for the wardrobe allowance, you have to change weather zones radically. Niger to Russia somehow qualifies, can you believe it? Would you be running around in a panic? I'm just blocking it out. I figure we're okay, as long as kids don't have to go to school the first day on ice skates.
what would you be buying?

What – do those socks have battery packs?! I do notice zero handknits on the list so far – you had better get on that!

Well, you should buy long johns for the whole family and the ticket to a warm and SUNNY place in the middle of the winter so that you do not kill yourselves for the lack of sunlight (you think I’m kidding…but nooooo, lack of sunlight has some crazy consequences. Of course candles and generous amounts of alcohol help…).

Long johns are a very good idea! Good luck finding them in D.C. in August, though. Good thing you’ll have The Internets for shopping. When I was going to Chile I had an awful time finding Winter clothes in Summer (not to mention Summer clothes in December).

I’m delighted to hear Camile thinks of herself as “we the French.” That self-confidence will serve her well in life!

I love orange. In California you either work for caltrans or you’re picking up garbage on the side of the road for drunk driving. But for me it means you’re either Dutch or Basque, and if you’re at the tour de france that’s where the real party is at. Or you need to be visible because you’re summitting a snowy mt., all good in my book. Patigonia, Mountain Hardware, Northface, Parana, my favorite designer labels. We have the technology, warm light wt. and breathable. Use those state $ wisely. On those really cold days don’t forget to grease up your nose so that it doesn’t fall off, and don’t put your tongue to the wrough iron fence (take it from a fool who knows). If you haven’t noticed I’m still somewhat in Costa Rica, even though we’re back home now. There you hardly need any clothes at all, quick dry works best though, (same designer labels!).

So, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ isn’t on the night stand any more, did you finish it? The last time I looked Vermont was East of Idaho, but maybe that’s a collector’s edition puzzle you have. If you can find ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ series for Camille, I think she’d like the books (4 so far). We’ll try to stay in better touch!
